The Center for Therapeutic Recreation is rejoining the City of Portland Recreation Department effective July 1, 2013. The center began as a city recreation program in 1974. Its mission is to provide quality professional aquatic and recreation opportunities to individuals with disabilities in community settings and to teach skills that will ease participation in inclusive recreation activities.

The center provides its programs in community-based pools and recreation facilities with the goal of transitioning participants to community programs when ready. The center’s focus has been its therapeutic and adapted aquatics program, and it is anticipated that the new merger will provide increased opportunities to grow the program to meet consumer need and offer a wide variety of land-based activities for all age-groups

The center’s adapted aquatics program follows the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program. All center employees are trained Red Cross Instructors and lifeguards, and certified recreation therapists and paraprofessionals. Classes are available for children and adults. All therapeutic aquatic programs are individualized based on participant needs

The center offers professional consultation and training, student internships, volunteer opportunities, service contracts, and special purpose programs.
